Consent—It’s Not Just About Sex

By Laura Peek, NO MORE|

When we hear the word “consent,” we think of sex. In recent years, the #MeToo movement has generated much-needed conversation around ensuring that sex is comfortable, safe, and consensual for everyone. More people are coming to understand that—in every sexual situation—consent is a must.

That’s why NO MORE teamed up with Healthline last year to create Your Guide to Sexual Consent, which lays it out simply—consent during sex should be clear, ongoing, coherent, and voluntary.

Even with all the buzz, consent isn’t so obvious and easy to some. Many still believe that asking for consent before and during sex will kill the mood or make things awkward. But consent is easier to understand when we consider how often we encounter it outside of sexual situations. Consent is not just about sexual intimacy, it is about navigating personal boundaries and treating others with respect.

NO MORE is proud to join the National Sexual Violence Resource Center in honoring Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM) with their I Ask campaign. Because asking for consent isn’t just a healthy and normal part of sex — it is a healthy and normal part of our everyday lives.

The more we ask for consent in our daily lives, the easier it is to ask for and understand consent during our most intimate and vulnerable moments. The goals of everyday consent mirror those of sexual consent—making another person feel heard, safe and comfortable—and we do it more often than we realize.
