No More! ¡No Mas!

Sat Oct 17 2015, 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm

On Saturday, October 17, 2:00 – 4:00 pm, the members of Our Voices and Nuestras Voces invite women, men and youth from the Austin community to gather at Austin City Hall Plaza to participate in No More! ¡No Mas!, the Second Annual English/Spanish Bilingual Event to bring awareness to the prevalence of domestic violence in our Central Texas communities. This event is proudly presented by survivors for survivors and our allies.

Our program will begin with a memorial for those women, children and men murdered at the hands of those who professed love for them. We will then march across the Ann Richards Bridge as we shout and bang our pots and pans throwing aside the shroud of silence and secrecy surrounding domestic violence. Upon returning to Austin City Hall, we will celebrate the survivors and our allies as we continue our work to bring an end to the scourge of partner violence.

In 2013, 119 Texas women, ages 17 to 85, were murdered by intimate partners, (Texas Council on Family Violence’s Honoring Texas Victims 2013). Additionally, 17 witnesses or bystanders were murdered and another 11 were injured. Domestic violence advocates have been working for decades to address attitudes that keep domestic violence hidden. These deaths and injuries clearly bring to light the impact of domestic violence as it expands beyond the primary victim in the relationship: intimate partner violence is a public health matter that affects everyone in our communities. Our Voices/Nuestras Voces refuse to remain silent any longer!

We are loud, proud and grateful for our lives! We will take up our pots and pans and make noise to bring the attention of the Central Texas community to the murderous implications of domestic violence. We refuse to remain silent any longer!

Join us at Austin City Hall on Saturday, October 17, at 2:00 p.m. as we:
Honor the Silent Victims,
Call Our Community to Action,
Celebrate the Survivors of Domestic Violence, and
Sing and dance on the Plaza!
